Our emotions in dreams can help us understand its meaning. Pay attention to how you felt in the dream. Pay attention to how you feel about boats in dreams. See how you feel about boats now, in your waking life.
What are possible meanings for dreams of boats?
Think of a boat in a dream as you, and the movement of it as your life. Where do you go, what shape is the boat in, and what type is it—cruise ship, yacht, rowboat, sailboat, fishing trawler? Is it casually crossing the water, or racing like a speedboat—struggling in a storm, or sitting unused—shiny and new, or weathered and taking on water? Any of these details can be used by a dream to create symbolism. And the ultimate question is, What does the boat say about you?
For example, a yacht struggling in a storm can symbolize trouble with your finances, perhaps from spending on unneeded luxuries. A leaky boat is picture of difficulty with emotions or finances. Rowing a boat in unison is the image of harmony.
A man dreams about being on a beach next to an old church. Giants tear down the church and use the materials to build a ship. By the end of the dream it’s ready to sail, symbolizing how his old religious life is being torn down but pieces of it are fitting together to form a new spirituality that will carry him away on a long personal journey. It’s a clever use of symbolism and a deeply meaningful dream.
The uses of a boat to create symbolism vary widely. A common use is as an analogy for your conscious mind. Your conscious mind sits atop the vastness of the unconscious mind like a boat on an ocean. The conscious mind is small in comparison to the unconscious. Most of the mind is “below the waterline,” meaning outside of conscious control and awareness. See: Oceans
Boats are vessels for exploration, so exploring with a boat is a heck of a metaphor for self-exploration. It’s a theme known to arise in the dreams of people doing deep inner work such as through therapy, meditation and dream analysis. They go into uncharted territory, down within themselves. The same dream imagery can be used to symbolize exploration of a subject or idea.
A boat can represent the psyche. Both are structure that sit atop something larger.
Together with water, a common symbol for emotions, boats are used by dreams to create symbolism through comparison. For example, a boat tossed around in an angry sea can symbolize internal forces rocking your thoughts and emotions, or something else that “rocks the boat.” A boat sinking can mean “going under,” overwhelmed by emotions. A calm sea is a metaphor for serenity, while a stormy sea is a metaphor for stormy emotions and situations. See: Psyches, Water
Boats go to destinations, and that association can be used to create a story about where you are headed in life and where you want to be—particularly if a destination is part of the dream-story. Boats generally take longer to reach destinations than other modes of transportation such as planes, so they’re a good dream symbol for heading toward a long-term goal, such as graduation, starting a family, or retirement. See: Embarking, Journeys
A boat can be used to create a comparison for the direction you’re headed in life and how you navigate changes as you go through phases. Are the waters calm or choppy, shallow or deep? Are you steering, or along for the ride? Do you hold course, or change direction? Are other people on the boat with you? These details can tell you the intent and message of the dream.
Reaching a new shore or crossing a river can indicate a new phase of life reached or an obstacle overcome. See: Rivers
A boat traveling through murky water can indicate pessimism or uncertainty.
A boat threatened with tipping can symbolize something threatening to upend your life.
A boat without a captain suggests lack of leadership or authority. See: Captains
A speedboat can symbolize the desire to reach destinations and goals quickly, or a love of thrills.
A canoe or kayak can indicate an independent spirit because these water craft are often used individually. See: Kayaks
A sailboat can symbolize being driven by intellect and mental pursuits, because wind can be a symbol for thoughts, and a sail catches the wind to propel a boat across the water. It can mean “wind in my sails.”

Very odd, vivid dream that terrified me.
So, a week ago I had a dream that really stuck with me for some reason. I woke up around 1 in the afternoon (I work nights), with my heart still racing from it and feeling extremely anxious. I’m just trying to make sense of it.
In the dream, I had traveled by boat to this woodland-covered island in the middle of the lake that my parents live on/where I grew up. This island exists in real life. It’s about a mile long and maybe 100 yards wide, covered in woods with some native wildlife like deer, grey foxes, armadillos, raccoons, etc. This island sits directly across the water from my parents house, we can see it easily from our backyard. I used to take my canoe over there and explore this island a lot as a teenager. Also noteworthy: This island was the site of a very small summer camp sometime in the 1950s. You can still see the crumbled remains of what were once the camp kitchen and bunks, very simple wooden structures with a few rusted cot frames, misc trash and an old kitchen stove remaining. This island also was once home to a small herd of goats put there to help maintain vegetation on the island, but all had disappeared by the 90s. People camp on it occasionally.
Moving on to the dream! It was broad daylight outside, sometime in early afternoon I think. I went, for reasons unknown, to the island by boat. I don’t recall what sort of boat I was in. I think my husband was with me, but that detail is murky. I walked through the woods to the middle of the island where the old camp used to be. The kitchen mess hall is still standing, a wooden structure about the size of a doublewide trailer with no doors attached to the entrances or glass in the windows.
I go inside. There is no electricity, but I can the interior fairly well from the daylight coming through the open doorways/windows. Inside, it is littered with trash and nylon camping tents/piles of bedding where people have been sleeping there on the dirty wooden floor. There are 2 darkened rooms off each end of the main room. There are also several groups of people milling about inside, talking and laughing like this was just their hangout spot. Maybe 8-12 people total. I am drawn to a tent in the center of the room. It is partially unzipped, so I peek inside. It is empty except for a black plastic trash bag,and lying beside the trash bag is the decomposing body of 1 of my 4 cats. I become instantly filled with indescribable terror and run towards the doorway to leave.
As I try to leave, a young couple enter the doorway as the male half proclaims “alright let’s go cheat!” while leading his laughing female companion towards one of the darkened side rooms. I look back into the main room and see a large but rather skinny pink pig rooting around in the trash strewn about. The whole atmosphere was like a “trap house”, an abandoned building where homeless addicts congregate to squat and use drugs.
In terror, I proclaim “how can you all just sit in here with this dead, rotting cat like it doesn’t exist???” I was especially terrified over the body of my dead cat. I couldn’t even walk near the tent he was in. I remember hoping the pig would just eat his body so it would be gone.
My husband and I are forced to spend the night here. We chose a spot in the building far away from my dead cat. Upon awakening the next day, we make a hasty getaway. Suddenly the doorway has a flimsy screen door on it. I look around the main room once more before we go. The people are gone, but the pig is still there, rooting around in the trash on the floor. I say to my husband “we should leave the door propped open so the pig can get out”. Then we leave.
In reality, my cat is healthy and fine. He’s an indoor-only cat and my baby.
Can someone interpret this wild AF dream for me??lol

I Dreamt of Almost Killing Myself, But Something Happened
For Context: this dream (which I never have) is a Nightmare with a good ending. I also want to note I am a survivor of 3 suicide attempts. I really shouldn't be alive.
The dream started with being in a classroom and this girl came up but like on her hands and feet all feral like. Super skinny, feral positioned, blonde hair scraggly with sharp teeth and leaped from desk to desk. I seemed ti be the only one who noticed as she jumped from desk to desk antagonizing students who didnt see her. She started screeching super loud. I muttered "ugh omg shut up".
She slowly turned her head to me and thats when I noticed her eyes were black. She crawled on the desks slowly and like the woman from the grudge. Now the classroom was empty. I then realized i was the only one who saw her and she was looking for someone who did. Now she was in my face and all i did was look down. She lifted my chin up with boney fingers and in a demonic voice said "you know we have a 5 year old son and he always loved me first". I looked down suddenly feeling that pain of heart break in stomach. I Said nothing. Didnt move. I now realized who she was so when I looked up She was now the girl my ex cheated on me with. She smiled and i staid solumm. She got mad that I wasnt getting upset. She yelled "WHY ARENT YOU ANGRY." I looked up with tears forming and said "It is a different feeling when you learn the love of your life was with someone else."
Her face realized something. She looked liked she was going to cry. I know why. But then suddenly she was back into the weird girl again, screeched, and ran away. The room was empty and flooding. I went outside and it was raining with thunder. People ran but i saw a puddle in the parking lot turn into the ocean.
I said outloud "I belong there". I waded into the water I felt it, i felt the rain. i knew i was going to kill myself. I could feel the fear leave, like it does. It felt so good in the water. Like it was meant to be. I got to my upper waste when a man on a boat came by. He had shaved black hair, small spike gadges, and pukah shells. The rain stopped but the sky was still grey.
"Hey there. Watcha doin?" He said. "Im not sure" I said. He smiled and said "well i could use your help saving more, they're lost in this storm, like you". Confused, he then pulled me into his boat and there were small seal pups everywhere. "They lost their mothers. They dont understand how to survive without someone to show them. Will you help me?"he asked. I said of course and the rest of the dream we went through the outer shores pulling in seals into the boat. I held the ones crying for there mothers until they looked at me and felt safe. The man did the same and sat with me. He took my hand and said,
"Survivors need to help those still surviving. It's really only when the Survivors do this, that they realized they themselves have finally survived."
And I woke up

My Dad passed away in front of me in my dream
Real life- My dad is 55 and has been extremely active his whole life. I mean,, he was never home. He was always out fishing, hunting, boating, etc.. About 8 months ago he woke up and out of nowhere was completely deaf in one ear and has been life changing vertigo, tiredness, exhaustion since. It was so so sudden and he is not the same man he was because he is extremely limited.
Anyways, I guess all this worry about not having answers and with him at his age just having problems like this so completely sudden has worried me.
I dreamt last night I went to his house amd he was on the couch laying down and then I realized he passed away. I CANNOT describe the amount of pain amd heartbreak I felt. I started SOBBING and screaming, I tried to remain calm when I dialed 911. I ended up texted my friends saying I'm now a member of the dead parent club (all my friends have lost their parents young and they joke about this club in real life) and then all the sudden my husband came in to make sure he wasn't barely alive because my husband was certified in life saving measures. Turns out he was barely alive but im unsure if it was going to make it. I had hope he would
But yeah, that dream was way too real for me. I'm 23 and I'm really close with him and I know it will happen eventually but I'm not ready and I think it manifested in this nightmare.
Anyways, thanks for listening.

false awakening / "don't worry, you're just in a trance"
This happened in January, but I wrote it down as soon as I woke up and I feel that I remember it quite well.
It started as a regular dream, which was quite vague and undefined. I was with friends at a Halloween themed party, and there was something to do with canal boats (I live near a canal). Totally usual dream stuff.
Then I was suddenly on a familiar street, and I saw a man in a suit, a trench coat, and a fedora. He said "you should come with me now." and I think he held out his hand.
As soon as he said that, I "woke up". He was kneeling or sitting on the floor next to my bed and he was talking to me. I can't remember exactly what he said cause at this point everything felt so vague. It was something along the lines of "don't worry, you're just in a trance", and he said something about computers. He said some more things, but I can't remember what. His voice was very calm. The feeling was so strange, I don't know what to compare it to. I imagine it was like being very drunk, except I don't drink so I can't be certain on the accuracy of that comparison.
Anyone experienced anything similar?
